VALUE to Describe Light
For this week I want you to copy the image in the photograph using pencil to create all the values that you see, including the background. Please use a larger format at least 5″x5″ or the whole page!

This assignment should take at least 30 minutes to an hour to complete effectively…we are stepping up the game a bit in the 2nd quarter…I know you can do it!

Cylinders, cones, and organic volumes change gradually from light to dark over their surfaces, while cubes, pyramids, and other angular forms change abruptly from light to dark on their surfaces. that is, their planes are emphasized by light.

Light as it falls over a form can be reduced to six categories:
– Highlight
– light
– shadow
– core of shadow
– reflected light
– cast shadow

And one more video…this artist is very good at shading….you can learn a lot by watching this one…he also speaks about following the contours of the form with your marks or brushstrokes!

This week I would like you to draw a full page landscape from your neighborhood. Please do this drawing from life and not a photograph…it can be your back yard, front yard. a view down your street, or a favorite park. You have a week to do this so please spend a little time on it!
